Quarzazate – Atlas Studios

Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate is one of the world’s largest film studios, set against the dramatic desert landscapes of southern Morocco and often called the “Hollywood of the Desert.” Its vast outdoor sets, from ancient Egyptian temples to biblical cities and desert fortresses have been used in countless international films, making a visit feel like stepping directly onto a movie set.

Travelling by minibus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate is not just a transfer, it’s an experience in its own right. The road climbs steadily into the High Atlas Mountains, winding through dramatic switchbacks and vast landscapes that feel increasingly remote with every kilometre. Snow-dusted peaks (in season), deep valleys, and small Berber villages cling to hillsides, offering glimpses into rural life far removed from the energy of Marrakech. The drive across the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass is unforgettable and sets the tone for what’s to come.

Marrakech to Ouarzazate: A Cinematic Journey

As the mountains gradually give way to arid plains and desert light, the scenery shifts again and suddenly it makes perfect sense why filmmakers fell in love with this region. The landscape itself looks like a ready-made movie set.

Atlas Studios: The “Hollywood of the Desert”

Arriving at Atlas Studios feels like stepping into multiple worlds at once. Spread across a vast open area, these studios are among the largest film studios in the world, and they have been attracting major international productions since the 1980s. On arrival, the scale is immediately impressive; towering façades, ancient-looking structures, and enormous open-air sets sit quietly under the Moroccan sun.

We were met by a local guide, who escorted us throughout the studios, bringing the sets to life with behind-the-scenes stories and film history. Without a guide, many of these structures could easily be mistaken for ruins, but once you know what you’re looking at, the magic really begins.

Famous Films Shot at Atlas Studios

Atlas Studios has hosted an extraordinary list of productions, including:

  • Gladiator
  • Kingdom of Heaven
  • The Mummy
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra
  • Babel
  • Game of Thrones (select scenes)

Standing inside these sets, it’s surreal to realise how many iconic scenes were filmed right where you’re standing, often with minimal CGI, relying instead on scale, craftsmanship, and the surrounding desert.

Walking Tour of Atlas Studios – What You’ll See

Ancient Egyptian Sets

One of the highlights is the Egyptian temple and palace sets, complete with massive columns, carved hieroglyphs, and grand courtyards. These sets have been reused and adapted for multiple productions and remain some of the most visually striking areas of the studio.

Ancient Cities & Biblical Backdrops

You’ll walk through streets designed to represent ancient Rome, Jerusalem, and biblical-era cities, with towering gates, stone stairways, and fortress walls. From a distance, they look centuries old, up close, your guide explains how cleverly they’re constructed for filming purposes.

Desert Fortresses & Kasbah-Style Sets

Reflecting local architecture, several kasbah-inspired fortresses are scattered across the site. These sets blend seamlessly with the real Moroccan landscape, making them ideal for historical epics and fantasy films.

Open Courtyards & Battle Sets

Large open spaces used for battle scenes and crowd shots give you a sense of just how many extras and crew members once filled these areas. Your guide points out where major scenes were staged and how camera angles transformed the sets on screen.

Props, Scale Tricks & Film Illusions

Throughout the tour, you’ll learn about clever filmmaking techniques, forced perspective, removable walls, and scaled façades designed purely for the camera. It’s a fascinating insight into how movie magic is created without relying entirely on digital effects.

Practical Visitor Guide

Location: Just outside Ouarzazate, often combined with visits to Aït Ben Haddou
Tour length: Approximately 60-90 minutes
Guides: Included with entry and highly recommended
Footwear: Comfortable shoes, uneven ground and lots of walking
Best time to visit: Late morning or afternoon, often paired with lunch in Ouarzazate

Many tours from Marrakech combine Atlas Studios with Aït Ben Haddou and the mountain crossing in a single (long but rewarding) day.
