The Basílica de la Sagrada Família is without question the most famous landmark in Barcelona, and one of the most extraordinary buildings ever constructed. Designed by legendary Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, construction first began in 1882, and remarkably it is still being completed today.
Gaudí took over the project in 1883 and transformed it into something entirely unique — a Basilica inspired by nature, geometry, and deep religious symbolism. He devoted the final 15 years of his life exclusively to this project, even living on site during the later stages of construction.

What makes the Sagrada Família so remarkable is its design. Instead of straight lines and traditional Gothic elements, Gaudí used organic shapes inspired by forests, trees, and natural forms. Inside, the towering columns branch outward like tree trunks, creating what many visitors describe as a stone forest filled with light.
The Basilica will eventually feature 18 towers, each representing important biblical figures. Twelve represent the Apostles, four symbolize the Evangelists, one honours the Virgin Mary, and the tallest tower — rising over 170 metres — will represent Jesus Christ.
Another breathtaking feature is the stained glass. As sunlight pours through the windows, the interior fills with brilliant colours that shift throughout the day, transforming the entire space into a living work of art.
Despite construction delays caused by wars and funding challenges, the basilica is now nearing completion and is expected to be finished around 2026, more than 140 years after it began.
Today, the Sagrada Família welcomes millions of visitors each year, making it one of the most visited monuments in Spain.
