Agra: On the banks of the Yamuna River, India

New Delhi to Agra

Agra:                                                                                                                                    The city is situated on the banks of the Yamuna river.Previous emperors ruled from Agra included; Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Luxurious forts, palaces and mausoleums were all created in this city. The Taj Mahal and Agra Fort have been declared World Heritage Sites by Unesco.

Travelling from New Delhi to Agra is one of the most popular day trips in India, and for good reason.

We opted for a private taxi, mainly to give ourselves flexibility and comfort, with the primary goal of seeing the Taj Mahal. The drive took around three hours, depending on traffic, and followed modern expressways that made the journey far smoother than we had expected. Leaving early in the morning is highly recommended, especially if you want to beat the crowds and heat at Agra’s main attractions.

The Taj Mahal: The Main Reason People Come

The centrepiece of any visit is, of course, the Taj Mahal. Seeing it in person is a very different experience from photographs. The scale, symmetry, and detail are breathtaking, particularly in the early morning light when the marble appears to change colour. Built between 1632 and 1653 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, it is both a monument of love and one of the world’s greatest architectural achievements.

Admission & timing:

  • Foreign visitor ticket: approx. ₹1,300 INR
  • Opening hours: Sunrise to sunset (closed Fridays)
  • Best time to visit: At opening time or late afternoon
Allow 2–3 hours to explore the complex without rushing.

Agra Fort: The Mughal Power Base

Just a short drive from the Taj is the imposing Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former seat of Mughal power. Built primarily of red sandstone, the fort provides essential historical context, showing how emperors lived, governed, and defended their empire. From inside the fort, there are striking views back toward the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna River – a reminder of the personal history tied to these monuments.

Admission & timing:

  • Foreign visitor ticket: approx. ₹650 INR
  • Opening hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
    Plan 1.5–2 hours here.

Mehtab Bagh: A Different Perspective

If time allows, Mehtab Bagh offers a quieter, less crowded view of the Taj Mahal from across the river. This garden was originally designed as part of the Taj complex and is particularly popular at sunset. It’s a calm contrast to the busy main site and ideal for photography.

Admission: approx. ₹300 INR
Time needed: 30–45 minutes

Optional Extension: Fatehpur Sikri

For travellers staying longer or returning later in the day, Fatehpur Sikri is a remarkable side trip. This abandoned Mughal city, built by Emperor Akbar in the late 16th century, is exceptionally well preserved and offers insight into imperial planning and architecture.

Getting Back to New Delhi

After a full day in Agra, returning to New Delhi by taxi is straightforward. Most travellers leave late afternoon or early evening, allowing time to avoid night driving if preferred. The return journey typically takes 3–4 hours, depending on traffic leaving the city. Alternatively, travellers can return by express train, which is faster but less flexible than a private car.

Final Thoughts

Agra is often treated as a quick stop, but when done properly it delivers far more than just a Taj Mahal photo. With thoughtful timing, a comfortable taxi transfer, and a paced itinerary, a day trip from New Delhi becomes a rich introduction to Mughal history, architecture, and one of the world’s most iconic sights. For My Return Ticket, Agra stands as one of those destinations that truly earns its place on a travel bucket list.
