Bayeux, France

Bayeux – A small Normandy town with a big story to tell. Driving from Paris and finally finding a parking spot I stepped out of our rental car into a place where time feels like it’s been stitched into the very air.

The medieval town of Bayeux beckons visitors from around the world, but its greatest draw is undoubtedly the Bayeux Tapestry, a stunning masterpiece of storytelling, preserved for nearly a millennium.

Inside the Museum: The Bayeux Tapestry

The Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux is a modest, almost unassuming museum at first glance, but stepping inside reveals one of history’s most awe-inspiring artifacts. The Bayeux Tapestry stretches for nearly 70 meters (230 feet) along a dimly lit display, depicting the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in 1066. It is not just a tapestry, it’s a historical record in wool and linen, telling the story of William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings with striking detail. A personal audio device allowed us to understand all the images in the Tapestry in a detailed narrative throughout the tour.

As I walked alongside this immense, embroidered work, I couldn’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship of its creators. The Tapestry is divided into panels, each carefully crafted to tell a segment of the story, from King Edward’s death to the bloody confrontation between the Normans and the Anglo-Saxons. The vivid colours; reds, blues, and golds, though faded by time, still stir the imagination. And the detail! From the expressions on the soldiers’ faces to the intricate patterns on the horses’ bridles, the scenes bring medieval history to life in a way that no textbook ever could.

A personal highlight for me was the depiction of Halley’s Comet. Its appearance, in the middle of the tapestry, was seen as a bad omen for King Harold of England, and unfortunately for King Harold it came true. The comet, depicted with fiery reds and oranges, streaks across the sky above the panicking Anglo-Saxon soldiers, a powerful reminder of how intertwined medieval minds were with superstition and celestial events.

Key Features and Practical Information

The museum, located at 13 Rue de Nesmond, is open every day from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM during peak tourist season (April through September), and from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, then 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM during the quieter months. Admission is €9.50 for adults, with discounts available for students, seniors, and families. Don’t miss the audio guide available in multiple languages, it really adds depth to the experience.

For those wanting to explore more, the museum also houses an excellent permanent exhibition explaining the historical context of the Tapestry and offers insight into its possible creation, use, and preservation over the centuries. There’s also a short film, included with admission, that covers the key points of the Norman Conquest and the Tapestry’s role in depicting it.

Why Bayeux is a Must-Visit Town

Don’t stop at the museum, Bayeux is not just about the Tapestry. The town itself is an unexpected gem, a place that has largely escaped the destruction that ravaged so much of Normandy during World War II. The medieval architecture is still intact, and strolling through the old streets is like stepping into another era. Bayeux Cathedral, a majestic Gothic building, towers over the town. Its history is closely linked to the Tapestry, which was likely commissioned for its consecration in 1077.

Another draw is Bayeux’s role in World War II history. It was the first town liberated by Allied forces after D-Day, and the excellent Bayeux War Cemetery and Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy serve as poignant reminders of the town’s more recent past.

In Bayeux, history is tangible, whether it’s the thousand-year-old Tapestry, the towering cathedral, or the memorials from the last century’s greatest conflict. It’s a place that rewards slow exploration and offers a window into both medieval and modern times.

Getting There from Paris

Bayeux is easily accessible from Paris, taking just over two hours by train from Gare Saint-Lazare. If you prefer to drive, it’s about a three-hour journey via the A13 motorway. Here’s a map to guide you from the heart of Paris to Bayeux.
