Tavira in a day!
Today we’re heading east across the Algarve on a 50-minute drive from Albufeira to Tavira — a town widely considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal.
The drive is easy, and once you arrive, parking is simple. We found a spot right in the centre beside the Gilão River, making it the perfect base to explore everything on foot.

Travel Guide to Tavira, Algarve, Portugal
Tavira immediately feels different, more relaxed, more authentic, and steeped in history.
Our first stop is the Roman Bridge, or Ponte Romana. Despite the name, the current structure dates mainly from the medieval period, likely the 12th or 13th century, though it may sit on earlier Roman foundations. Today, it remains one of Tavira’s most iconic viewpoints.
Next, we head up to Tavira Castle, originally built by the Moors in the 11th century. It was later captured in 1242 during the Christian reconquest, and the surrounding gardens now offer some of the best panoramic views across the town and the Ria Formosa.
Just beside it stands Santa Maria Church, first constructed in the 13th century on the site of a former mosque. It was heavily rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, but still holds great historical significance, including the tomb of Dom Paio Peres Correia, the knight who led the reconquest of Tavira.
From there, we visit one of Tavira’s most unique attractions; the Camera Obscura, opened in 2004 inside a converted water tower. Using a system of mirrors and lenses, it projects a live 360-degree view of the town, guided by experts who bring Tavira’s past and present to life.
After that, we slow things down with a walk along the riverside promenade, where colourful buildings, small boats, and waterside cafés reflect the laid-back rhythm of the Algarve.
If you have more time, Tavira opens up even further.
A short ferry takes you to Ilha de Tavira, part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, established in 1987. Here you’ll find over 10 kilometres of sandy coastline, along with traditional salt pans that have been producing sea salt for centuries.
Tavira is easy to reach, easy to explore, and offers a deeper, more authentic side of the Algarve.
A perfect day trip!
