Algarve’s Beautiful Beach vs Nightlife Strip
Today, Day 6 of our Algarve Road Trip, was about exploring two very different sides of Albufeira.
Just fifteen minutes east of town lies Praia da Falésia, one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Algarve and perhaps Europe.
It’s a place that means a lot to us because we’ve stayed here before at the PortoBay Falésia Hotel — a hotel with one of the best cliff-top locations anywhere in the world.
Famous Falésia Cliff-Top Views
The hotel itself is currently undergoing renovations, so disappointingly, we couldn’t stay there this time. We did manage to find our way around the back of the property and down the familiar steps that lead directly to the beach.
And what a moment it was when the coastline opened up.
The sun was out, waves rolling steadily in, and the famous Falésia cliffs were glowing in deep shades of orange and red against the green pine trees above and the golden blonde sand below. It’s a spectacular stretch of coastline, nearly six kilometres long and consistently ranked among the best beaches in Portugal. In fact in a Trip Advisor survey it states the Falésia beach is amongst the best in the world.

It felt calm, peaceful, and beautifully simple.
We then made our way to one of our favourite beach restaurants, Restaurante O Golfinho, which had just reopened for the season that very day. We met the owner and some of the staff, who were incredibly friendly and welcoming, the kind of place where you instantly feel comfortable. They were surprised we were happy to sit on the outside patio as they still find the weather too cold. Lunch was perfect. I chose freshly caught grilled cod with fingerling potatoes & roasted garlic, plus a fresh tomato & cucumber salad. Andrew went for grilled chicken with mushroom sauce and a mixed salad, and we finished with a chocolate mousse & tiny chocolate ice cream treats.
Honestly, it was one of those afternoons where you could happily stay all day. Funnily enough, soft music from one of our favourites, Jack Johnson, played quietly in the background, the sound of the Atlantic waves rolling in, warm sunshine… this is winter in the Algarve.
The Nightlife and the Entertainment Strip
Eventually, we pulled ourselves away and headed back toward Albufeira to visit another side of town — the famous Strip. Walking along Avenida Sá Carneiro in the afternoon was surprisingly calm, but you can already sense what happens here after dark. Bars, clubs, restaurants and neon signs line both sides of the street. It almost feels a little like they’re going for a Las Vegas vibe, but on a much smaller scale.
After a quick stop at Pingo Doce to pick up groceries, we returned to the apartment for a break. Later that evening, we went back out to see the Strip transformed.
The atmosphere had completely changed. Music pumping, crowds filling the sidewalks, bars and restaurants buzzing with people. It was lively, loud, and full of energy.
If we had to choose between the two experiences today — the beach or the Strip — the beach wins, hands down. Because Praia da Falésia, even in winter, is simply unforgettable.

Verdict:
So here’s the deal. If you enjoy a good party & sleep like a rock no matter where you are… then the Strip & Old Town area are for you.
But if you want to enjoy the sound of birds, peaceful crashing waves & have a good night’s sleep… then you definitely want to stay further out of town.
