Benagil Cave, Praia da Marinha and Carvoeiro; Algarve’s Most Famous Coastline
Today is Day 2 of our 9 day road trip & we’re visiting three of the Algarve’s most famous coastal spots — Benagil Cave, Praia da Marinha, and Carvoeiro. They look unbelievable online… but are they actually worth it in real life? Let’s find out.
The Benagil Cave is probably the most photographed spot in the entire Algarve and when you see it in person, you’ll understand why.
We drove about 40 minutes from Albufeira to the tiny village of Benagil, arriving just after ten in the morning. In February, parking was manageable — but in summer, this place is intense.
There are a few ways to see the cave: by guided boat, kayak if conditions allow, or from the clifftop above. Swimming isn’t recommended — strong currents and boat traffic make that risky.
Approaching in a boat is the real experience. The cave is far larger than photos suggest, and that circular skylight above lets a beam of natural light pour onto the sand below. It changes by the minute.
Is it busy?
Yes. Is it famous? Absolutely.
But hype aside, Benagil is genuinely impressive. And in winter, it feels far more accessible.
Praia da Marinha
If Benagil is famous for its cave, Praia da Marinha is famous for its cliffs.
Just ten minutes from Benagil, this is classic Algarve scenery; golden limestone arches, turquoise water, and dramatic coastal drops. The biggest mistake people make? Going straight down to the beach.
Instead, walk along the clifftop trail first. The elevated views are extraordinary, you’ll see natural rock formations and arches that look almost sculpted. Parking here in February was easy. In summer, again, it’s a different story.
The beach itself is beautiful, but the magic is from above. This is where you get that wide, cinematic Algarve look. Praia da Marinha isn’t just pretty. It’s one of the defining coastal landscapes of Portugal.
Carvoeiro
After the cliffs of Marinha, Carvoeiro offers contrast.
It’s compact, charming, and built around a small sheltered beach framed by whitewashed buildings. Parking in winter was straightforward, just outside the main centre.
Carvoeiro feels more intimate than some Algarve towns. It’s easy to walk, simple to navigate, and enjoy without rushing. We discovered a great little cafe/restaurant called Cafe Fino where we sat outside in the shade. My husband had a pineapple lemonade & I had a delicious beet, orange, carrot & honey juice. For lunch we ate a BLT & an Abacate Lovers – ABACATE LOVERS –
smashed avocado, poached eggs, black sesame seeds, black pepper, chives, pomegranate seeds, on a salad with balsamic cream. It only came to $44 & the service was excellent.
So Carvoeiro was less dramatic than Marinha, but more relaxed. And that balance worked beautifully.
