The Ultimate 9-Day Algarve Road Trip

Based in Albufeira | Winter Edition | Real Experiences

My husband and I decided we would take nine days to explore the Algarve, Portugal. We have been to Portugal before and absolutely loved it, however, we didn’t have the time to discover everything the Algarve has to offer. So over a week and a half we found wonderful spots, hidden beaches, historical landmarks and we’re sharing them with you, our followers.

The Algarve has a reputation. Golden cliffs. Hidden caves. Whitewashed towns. Dramatic Atlantic coastline. But is it worth exploring in winter? And is Albufeira really the best base?

We spent nine full days based in Albufeira with a small Fiat 500, exploring the entire Algarve; west, east, inland and coastal and here is exactly how we did it. No fluff. No filters. Just honest travel. You can also read about where we stayed in Albufeira, the benefits and the challenges.

Day 1 – Albufeira Orientation: Is It the Right Base?

Albufeira was our base for the entire trip. The goal on day one was simple: understand the town before judging it.

Old Town has charm, whitewashed buildings, tiled façades, small squares, and plenty of café life even in late February. It’s lively without being overwhelming in winter.

Parking near the main square can be tight. It took patience, but our Fiat 500 squeezed in comfortably. If you’re driving something large in summer, expect stress. At the marina, however, parking was effortless.

We stopped at Dreams Café for cappuccino, hot chocolate and pastel de nata — €19 in total. Later, a light lunch at Lemon Drops Restaurant in the Marina came to €24.

Albufeira isn’t the quietest Algarve town, but as a logistics base, it works extremely well.

Day 2 – Benagil Cave, Praia da Marinha & Carvoeiro

Scenic view of rugged cliffs along the coastline with turquoise waters and rocky formations under a clear blue sky.

This is postcard Algarve.

The Benagil Cave remains one of the most photographed sea caves in Europe. In winter, boat tours depend on sea conditions, so always check in the morning. Praia da Marinha delivers dramatic limestone arches and elevated cliff viewpoints that honestly look edited, but aren’t.

Carvoeiro adds a walkable boardwalk section and a compact coastal town vibe. Drive time from Albufeira: ~40 minutes. Parking in February: manageable and far easier than summer.

Day 3 – Lagos & Ponta da Piedade

If you’ve seen Algarve imagery online, chances are it was filmed here. Ponta da Piedade’s golden rock stacks and turquoise water are extraordinary. Even in February, the colours were striking.

Lagos Old Town feels more refined than Albufeira; historic walls, smaller streets, slightly calmer energy. Drive time: 55–60 minutes each way. Worth every kilometre.

Day 4 – Sagres & Cabo de São Vicente

The Algarve changes completely in Sagres. Wilder. Windier. More exposed.

Cabo de São Vicente feels like the edge of Europe; vast Atlantic energy and dramatic cliffs. It’s raw and powerful compared to the central Algarve’s softer coastline. Drive time from Albufeira: 1 hour 20 minutes.

The longest driving day, but incredibly scenic.

Day 5 – Loulé and Vilamoura

Vilamoura contrasts sharply; manicured marina, yachts, resort feel. This was our easiest driving day; all within 25 minutes of Albufeira.

Loulé’s market provides colour and local character.

Day 6 – Praia da Falésia Algarve – Cliffs & Nightlife

The famous Falésia cliffs glow in deep shades of orange and red against the green pine trees above and the golden blonde sand below. It’s a spectacular stretch of coastline, nearly six kilometres long and consistently ranked among the best beaches in Portugal. And then there’s the nightlife – a mini Vegas!

Day 7 – Olhão & the Islands

Olhão feels different again, a working harbour, more seafood focus, fewer polished façades.

The markets are lively in the morning, and boat connections to the barrier islands make this a perfect half-day island escape. The Ria Formosa lagoon system adds a completely different Algarve landscape; shallow waters, sandbanks, birdlife and island communities. Drive time: 45 minutes from Albufeira.

Winter travel here feels local, not curated. Drive time: 50 minutes.

Day 9 – Tavira

We saved Tavira for a later day trip and it felt right.

Tavira is elegant and relaxed, with its Roman bridge, riverside setting and traditional architecture. It’s quieter than central Algarve towns and feels more balanced.

Drive time: 1 hour 10 minutes from. Albufeira

Day 9 – Tavira Salt Flats

The Tavira Salt Flats, part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, have produced sea salt for centuries using shallow evaporation ponds called salinas. Seawater evaporates under sun and wind, leaving natural salt still harvested by hand. The wetlands also attract flamingos and migratory birds, blending traditional industry with an important protected coastal ecosystem.

Drive time: 1 hour 10 minutes from. Albufeira

Why Base in Albufeira?

After nine days of driving the entire region, here’s the honest verdict:

Albufeira works because:

  • It sits centrally.
  • West and east are equally accessible.
  • Supermarkets, fuel, parking and accommodation are plentiful.
  • It offers both beach and town atmosphere.

Albufeira may not suit:

  • Those seeking quiet village charm.
  • Travellers wanting exclusively historic ambience.

But as a road trip base?

It’s highly practical.

February vs Summer

February brought:

  • Easier parking.
  • Manageable traffic.
  • Cooler sea temperatures.
  • Softer light.
  • More authentic pace.

For exploring, winter is arguably better.

Final Thoughts

The Algarve is not one destination.

It’s multiple micro-regions stitched together by cliffs, villages and Atlantic energy. Over nine days, based in one town, we experienced dramatic coastlines, mountain villages, seafood harbours, medieval castles and serene lagoons. That’s what makes it worth a return ticket.
