A day trip from Marrakech to the Ouzoud Waterfalls turned out to be one of the biggest highlights of our time in Morocco.
A Day Trip from Marrakech to the Ouzoud Waterfalls – Raw, Powerful, Unforgettable
From the moment we arrived at the parking area, the adventure began. Our guide led us through a narrow village walkway, stone paths, small homes, and everyday life unfolding quietly around us, before guiding us to a viewpoint at the top of the gorge. And then, almost without warning, the waterfalls appeared.
The sight was genuinely awe-inspiring. The Ouzoud Waterfalls plunge dramatically over multiple tiers, and on this particular day they looked completely different from the postcards. Due to recent heavy rainfall, the water had taken on a deep brown colour, something our guide explained is often called the “chocolate waterfall” effect. The heavy runoff carries mud and sediment down the falls, changing the colour but amplifying the drama. Instead of delicate cascades, we were witnessing raw power, water thundering down with incredible force.

From the viewpoint, we began our steep descent toward the base of the falls, carefully navigating stone steps that wind down the cliffside. Along the way, we passed the occasional vendor selling exactly the kind of tourist trinkets you’d expect, magnets, scarves, and souvenirs, adding colour and character to the route. As we descended further, the roar of the water grew louder, and the scale of the falls became even more impressive.
At the bottom, the experience completely changes. Standing close to the base gives you a front-row seat to the sheer power of the falls as they crash into the river below. It’s no exaggeration to say that the Ouzoud Waterfalls are among the largest and most impressive waterfalls in North Africa, and seeing them up close drives that point home. Mist hangs in the air, the ground vibrates slightly underfoot, and it’s impossible not to stop and stare.
Lunch was another unexpected treat. There’s an open-air restaurant at the base of the falls, perfectly positioned to enjoy the view while taking a well-earned break. We enjoyed a relaxed, delicious meal, watching the water tumble down in front of us; one of those travel moments where everything just feels right. Normally, visitors can rent small boats at the base to get even closer for photos, but due to the high water levels, boat operations were suspended that day. Honestly, the falls were so powerful that we didn’t feel short-changed in the slightest.
One thing we had to stay alert for on the walk was the local monkey population. They’re confident, clever, and always on the lookout for unattended bags or food. Extra care was definitely required, no dangling snacks, no open bags, but seeing them up close in their natural environment added another layer to the experience.
After lunch and plenty of time spent admiring the waterfalls, we began the climb back up, stopping to catch our breath, buy cold drinks for the journey, and look back over the countless photos we’d taken along the way. As we returned to the vehicle and started the drive back to Marrakech, we couldn’t stop replaying the day in our minds.
The Ouzoud Waterfalls aren’t just a scenic stop, they’re an experience. Powerful, dramatic, and surprisingly immersive, this day trip left a lasting impression on us. It’s one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve returned home, something to remember forever.
