Newly renovated rooms and an unbeatable location beside Petco Park and the Gaslamp Quarter

The Omni San Diego Hotel at the Ballpark, near the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego, was a fairly newly renovated space when we stayed for a 7-day trip.

Its elevated guest rooms were clean & spacious, there was also a meeting space, handy to the heart of downtown.

The hotel completed a top-to-bottom US$30-million renovation in June 2024. It included all guestrooms, the lobby, meeting areas, pool deck and new dining concepts. The property has 511 guestrooms, more than 32,000 square feet of meeting space and 21 meeting rooms.

We didn’t have a chance to enjoy the rooftop pool but it looks beautiful. There’s also an open-air poolside restaurant and bar, called Tortuga. The Omni is perfectly situated near the San Diego Convention Centre & the Gaslamp Quarter, where there are lots of places to eat – everything from Starbucks to bar & grills to fine dining, even rooftop patios.

The Skybridge, at the Omni Hotel, does not provide unrestricted entry into Petco Park. Guests still need a valid event ticket and must meet the hotel’s current access conditions and stadium security requirements.

The cafe style Omni Market (Fres.co) is in the lobby and it has grab-and-go options like coffee, espresso drinks, pastries, sandwiches, salads, snacks, and bottled drinks. It was quick, casual and good for morning coffee before a meeting, game or day-trip like ours.

We really didn’t have a lot of spare time to enjoy the hotel amenities as we were touring San Diego & Mexico but would stay here again.

For us, the greatest advantage was the location. We could leave the hotel and be among the restaurants and historic buildings of the Gaslamp Quarter within minutes. Petco Park was next door, the convention center was nearby and San Diego’s waterfront was also within comfortable walking distance. That made the Omni particularly convenient when we had a full sightseeing schedule and didn’t want to waste time repeatedly travelling across the city.

Our room gave us plenty of space to organize ourselves between excursions and was quiet enough to relax after some very busy days. The renovation had given the room a clean, contemporary appearance without making it feel cold or overly corporate. Although this is a large downtown hotel, we never felt disconnected from the city around us.

We appreciated having a convenient lobby café for coffee and something quick in the morning. On days when we were heading out early for a tour, that was considerably easier than searching for breakfast elsewhere. We were usually out exploring from morning until evening, so convenience mattered more to us than having an elaborate hotel breakfast.

Our only regret was not setting aside time for the rooftop pool and Tortuga. The outdoor terrace looked like an ideal place to take a break, particularly after a long day walking around San Diego. Even without making full use of the amenities, the comfortable room and excellent location made the Omni a strong base for our trip. We would happily stay here again, but next time, we would protect at least one afternoon for that rooftop pool.

The hotel accepts a limited number of cats and dogs, subject to size restrictions and an additional cleaning fee. Service animals are exempt. Confirm the current policy before booking.

Parking

The hotel provides valet parking, but overnight rates can be extremely high—recent third-party listings have shown approximately US$70 per night. Nearby public garages may cost less, although event pricing applies during Padres games and conventions.

Destination fee

A nightly destination fee may be added to the room rate. Current inclusions reportedly feature enhanced Wi-Fi, two bottles of water daily, local telephone calls, dining discounts and selected attraction offers. Verify the total price before booking; the headline room rate may not include parking, taxes or the destination fee.

Petco Park Skybridge

The pedestrian Skybridge directly connects the hotel with Petco Park. Current hotel information indicates that access may be included with selected baseball packages or available after spending at least US$40 on hotel food and beverages. A valid game ticket and stadium security screening are still required.
