Big flavours, craft beer and a lively Gaslamp atmosphere near Petco Park

Union Kitchen and Tap San Diego is a Gaslamp Quarter favourite in San Diego – craft beer + gastropub food in a big, energetic space.

We stopped by there after our trolley day trip, and were not disappointed. This industrial-chic space with 2 floors + a patio, was semi-loud, social & had lots of different sports on TVs.

We found they are open daily for lunch through late night, but keep in mind, it will get packed on Padres game days (the ball field is two blocks away). Weekend brunch is officially served Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

We’d call it elevated pub fare, with big portions, the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich for me, with Truffle Fries and a San Diego burger and fries for Mr. MRT. Chardonnay for him & one of their cocktail specials for me, rounded out the meal nicely.

They’ve got shareables like pretzels with beer cheese, roasted Brussels sprouts, or Nachos. They’re known for their brunch on weekends serving breakfast burritos, chicken & waffles & Bloody Marys.

Apparently the drinks are why people go: Dozens of beers on tap – one of the biggest selections in Gaslamp. They also carry lots of local San Diego craft beers. Of course, they have cocktails + wine too. The numerous televisions make it a popular place for Padres games, college sports, international soccer and major sporting events.

Popular taps change regularly, but look for San Diego breweries such as Ballast Point, Stone, Coronado Brewing and Pacific Beach AleHouse. Ask the server what is local and freshest when you visit.

It’s not fancy steakhouse vibes. It’s the place to go with friends for beer, good food, and a game.

After spending much of the day riding the San Diego Trolley and exploring the city, Union Kitchen & Tap was exactly the type of relaxed restaurant we needed. We could sit down, take our time and enjoy a substantial meal without the formality, or prices, of one of the Gaslamp Quarter’s upscale steakhouses.

My Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich had plenty of flavour and heat without overwhelming everything else, while the truffle fries made it feel considerably more indulgent than standard pub food. Mr. MRT’s burger was juicy, generously sized and accompanied by another mountain of fries. Neither of us was in any danger of leaving hungry.

The restaurant’s energy was also part of the experience. Conversations, televised sports and the open layout made it relatively loud, but it suited the location. This was the Gaslamp Quarter, just a couple of blocks from Petco Park, not a quiet candlelit dining room. We enjoyed our drinks, watched the activity around us and agreed that it was an easy, enjoyable way to finish our trolley-tour day.

Reservations are strongly recommended during Padres home games, Comic-Con and major downtown events.

Energetic and social, with reclaimed wood, modern furnishings, garage-style doors, several televisions and an outdoor patio. It may not suit anyone seeking a quiet dinner.

Dietary requirements:
The seasonal menu usually provides salads, seafood and meat-free choices, but visitors with allergies or strict dietary requirements should confirm preparation methods directly.

Parking and transport:
Paid garages and metered spaces are available around the Gaslamp Quarter, but prices rise during games and special events. The Gaslamp Quarter trolley station is nearby, making public transit the simpler option on busy days.
