Jolly Sailor, Cabanas de Tavira⎮One of Our Best Restaurant Experiences in Europe (Hidden Gem Worth the Trip)

Not all great meals are planned. Sometimes, the best ones are the places you almost walk past. The Jolly Sailor wasn’t on our must-visit list… but it ended up being one of the top dining experiences of our entire European trip.

Great Food, Entertainment & Service (#1 Choice)

We’re on day 48 of our 56 day European tour. And it took until now to have a meal/experience that was something we could describe as spectacular. That’s not to say we didn’t have good meals or decent service along the way. But this. This was fantastic.

When we arrived in Cabanas de Tavira we noted a restaurant (The New Jolly Sailor restaurant) literally right out our back door. We thought oh, we should try that place… The first Sunday we realized they had live music too. We said oh, we should really try that place.

We reserved a table for the last Sunday of our trip & let us just say… from the moment we sat down to when we finally left… perfection. There was a huge party of people on the patio so we could only sit inside but to be honest, it was a little windy to be out there and we were so close to the patio, it was just fine.

The entertainment was right outside the door, the band was called Cookie Monsters & was excellent. The large party of people were so friendly & chatty as they went in and out to the bar, and we met a couple from London sitting near us. They suggested we visit Sintra when we’re in Lisbon, as of course, we got to chatting.

We ordered Rose Sangria & both had the special of the day: Roast Beef. It came with roasted carrots, broccoli, green beans & Yorkshire pudding, plus both roasted & mashed potatoes. The gravy was so delicious & had to have been made with wine… delectable. Despite having eaten every morsel of our meal, we somehow couldn’t leave without dessert. We had chocolate mousse & caramel cheesecake & they were also excellent.

We had to chuckle, as our server would dance past us or while he was clearing a table, clearly enjoying the live music & his job. We asked the team if they would let us get their photo as they were working so hard to serve the full restaurant and there were only 8 staff, unbelievable. (Watch TikTok Video)

This was definitely a place we would return again & again. The price was right. The food – mouthwatering. The service – top notch. We overheard another guest asking who owned the restaurant & had to laugh, as it’s the same owner as Bar 66 (that we enjoyed x2) & Murphy’s Irish Bar, along the promenade, that we’ve noticed is always quite busy.

If you’re ever in Cabanas de Tavira, you’ve got to make a reservation at the New Jolly Sailor, Quinta Velha, you’ll thank us.
