Discover the Heart of the Fraser Valley: Historic Downtown, Mountain Views, Beautiful Parks and Country Roads
Why Visit Abbotsford?
Abbotsford is often described as the heart of British Columbia’s Fraser Valley, and it’s easy to understand why. Surrounded by fertile farmland, with the spectacular Cascade Mountains rising to the east and the Fraser River marking much of its northern boundary, this is a city where nature, agriculture and urban life all come together.
Having spent considerable time living and exploring Abbotsford we think it’s one of the Fraser Valley’s most underestimated destinations. Many people know Abbotsford for its international airport or the famous Abbotsford International Airshow, but there’s considerably more to discover.
You can start the morning walking around beautiful Mill Lake, enjoy lunch in historic downtown Abbotsford and then head into the countryside to explore farm markets, vineyards and mountain viewpoints.
One of the things we particularly enjoy about Abbotsford is how quickly the scenery changes. Within minutes of leaving a busy commercial area, you can find yourself driving past dairy farms, berry fields and quiet country roads framed by mountains.
Abbotsford is also perfectly positioned for exploring the wider Fraser Valley, making it an excellent base for couples who enjoy scenic drives, local food, history and outdoor adventures.

Three Interesting Facts About Abbotsford
1. Abbotsford has one of North America’s most important Sikh heritage landmarks.
The historic Gur Sikh Temple was completed in the early 20th century and is the oldest surviving Sikh temple in North America. Recognized as a National Historic Site in 2002, the building tells an important story about early Sikh immigration, the lumber industry and the development of the Fraser Valley.
2. Much of Sumas Prairie was once underwater.
Before major drainage projects in the 1920s, Sumas Lake covered a substantial area southeast of Abbotsford. Its disappearance transformed the landscape into agricultural land. The devastating floods of November 2021 demonstrated how vulnerable this former lakebed remains.
3. Abbotsford has a remarkable aviation history.
The airport was established during the Second World War as a military training facility. Today, Abbotsford International Airport connects the Fraser Valley to destinations across Canada and beyond, while the annual airshow has become one of the region’s signature events and one of the top airshows in the country.
