When summer arrives in British Columbia, there’s something irresistible about heading for the ocean. Living in the Fraser Valley means we’re never too far from a coastal escape, and on this particular day, partial clouds mixed with brilliant blue skies made the decision easy.
We left Abbotsford and made the drive west toward Crescent Beach, a charming seaside community tucked away near White Rock and South Surrey. We’ve visited before, so we already knew what awaited us. Unlike some of Metro Vancouver’s better-known beaches, Crescent Beach feels hidden away from the larger tourist crowds. It has a quieter, slower pace that immediately puts visitors at ease.
One of the Fraser Valley’s Best Summer Day Trips
The drive from Abbotsford takes just under an hour depending on traffic, making it one of the easiest ocean day trips for Fraser Valley residents. As we approached the waterfront, we were pleasantly surprised to find street parking was free for two hours, which is always a bonus for a spontaneous day trip.
After parking, we walked a couple of hundred yards toward the shoreline. The village atmosphere is one of the first things you’ll notice. Small cafes, local restaurants and beach homes line the streets, creating a welcoming coastal vibe that feels more like a small seaside town than part of a major metropolitan area.
Lunch was next on the agenda. We stopped at a local take-out restaurant where my husband ordered fish and chips while I chose fish tacos. With food in hand, we headed directly to the beach and found the perfect seat; a large driftwood log that had washed ashore. Sitting there, listening to the gentle sounds of the water while enjoying fresh seafood, felt like the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon.
The tide was well out, exposing large stretches of sand and tidal flats. A scattering of rocks lined portions of the shoreline, while the sandy beach stretched toward the water’s edge. Unlike many popular beaches on a warm day, Crescent Beach felt wonderfully uncrowded.
In the distance we watched parasailers gliding above Boundary Bay while dog walkers, families and couples enjoyed leisurely strolls along the shoreline. Looking north, the mountains formed a dramatic backdrop while Vancouver’s skyline could be seen shimmering across the water on the horizon.
One of the most interesting aspects of Crescent Beach is its history. The community began developing in the early 1900s after the arrival of the Great Northern Railway. What was once a quiet vacation retreat quickly became a popular seaside destination for Vancouver residents looking to escape city life. Much of that relaxed character remains today.
The beach sits along Boundary Bay, one of the most ecologically important coastal areas in British Columbia. The bay is internationally recognized as a critical stopover point for migratory birds travelling along the Pacific Flyway. During certain times of year, birdwatchers from around the world visit the area hoping to spot thousands of shorebirds gathering along the mudflats.
The nearby Crescent Beach Pier has long been one of the area’s most recognizable landmarks. Stretching out into the bay, it offers excellent views of the shoreline, passing boats and the distant North Shore Mountains. On a clear day, the scenery is spectacular.
As we sat on our driftwood log watching the ocean, it was easy to understand why so many locals return here year after year. Crescent Beach isn’t about amusement rides, large crowds or flashy attractions. Its appeal comes from simplicity, a beautiful beach, ocean views, fresh sea air and a slower pace of life.
Eventually our two hours were nearly up. We made our way back through the village, returned to the car and headed home to Abbotsford.
