This is the Chilliwack Valley; wide, quiet, and framed by some of the most dramatic mountains in the Fraser Valley.

The Chilliwack River runs alongside you for much of the drive, flowing more than 100 kilometres from the mountains down toward the Fraser. In winter, the river becomes a gathering place. January is prime time for steelhead fishing, and you’ll often see anglers spread out along the banks, working the cold, clear water for steelhead, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, and Dolly Varden.

Temperatures here usually hover between minus three and plus two degrees. Cold enough to keep the snow on the peaks, but mild enough to explore comfortably. Above the valley floor, Mount Cheam rises to nearly 2,100 metres, standing out with its broad face and snow-covered ridge lines. The area around it is packed with trails, from riverside walks to challenging alpine routes that draw hikers year-round.

As you continue east, the valley narrows, forests thicken, and the feeling changes. Eventually, the road leads you into Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park, home to Chilliwack Lake, a deep, glacier-fed lake surrounded by steep, snow-dusted mountains. In winter, it’s calm, quiet, and beautifully raw. From Vedder Road, it’s just under 40 kilometres, about a 45-minute drive, but it feels far removed from everyday life. This is the Chilliwack Valley in winter.
