Welcome to Normandy

Few places in Europe combine history, beautiful countryside and memorable travel experiences quite like Normandy.

From the dramatic coastline that changed the course of the Second World War to medieval towns that have stood for centuries, Normandy offers visitors an unforgettable glimpse into both France’s past and present.

During our three-day journey we explored some of the region’s most important historical sites before returning to Paris and boarding the Eurostar for the next stage of our European adventure.

Whether you’re fascinated by military history, medieval architecture or simply enjoy discovering authentic French towns, this itinerary offers an excellent introduction to one of France’s most remarkable regions.

Why Normandy Should Be on Your Bucket List

Normandy is much more than the famous D-Day landing beaches.

Visitors will discover picturesque villages, magnificent cathedrals, fascinating museums, excellent local cuisine and a landscape that quietly tells stories stretching back hundreds of years.

It’s also one of the easiest regions to explore by car from Paris, making it ideal for a short road trip.

Our Three-Day Journey

Our itinerary combined history, remembrance and exploration at a comfortable pace.

Along the way we visited world-class museums, stood on the beaches where thousands of Allied troops landed on June 6, 1944, wandered through the medieval streets of Bayeux and admired one of France’s finest cathedrals before completing the journey aboard the famous Eurostar train to London.

Each stop deserves time to appreciate its unique story.

The Bottom Line

This was one of our best trips, despite being only 3 days. Seeing the Normandy beaches really helped to understand the D-Day Landings better and the museums were quite incredible. The Eurostar was fast and efficient and yet another amazing experience. Highly recommended.

The Five Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches

Listed geographically from west to east:

  • Utah Beach: The westernmost landing sector, assigned primarily to American forces.
  • Omaha Beach: The American landing sector that experienced some of the fiercest fighting and heaviest Allied casualties on D-Day.
  • Gold Beach: Assigned primarily to British forces, with the capture of Arromanches helping establish the artificial Mulberry harbour.
  • Juno Beach: The principal Canadian landing sector, extending approximately nine kilometres along the Normandy coast.
  • Sword Beach: The easternmost landing sector, where British forces and Free French commandos came ashore.

The five landings took place on June 6, 1944, as part of Operation Overlord. Pointe du Hoc was another critical D-Day objective between Utah and Omaha, but it was not a sixth landing beach.
