If you’ve never experienced drag racing in person, Mission Raceway Park deserves a place on your Fraser Valley bucket list.
Located along the banks of the Fraser River in Mission, British Columbia, this legendary motorsports facility has been entertaining racing fans for decades. While television can never truly capture the atmosphere, standing only metres from a vehicle launching down the quarter-mile at more than 200 km/h is something you’ll never forget.
My husband visited during the Friday Test & Tune session. Unlike the busy weekend race days, Fridays offer a relaxed atmosphere where competitors focus on perfecting their cars before competition begins. There were no large crowds, making it easy to walk around the pits, watch mechanics at work and chat with drivers who were more than happy to answer questions about their race cars.
One of the best parts of Mission Raceway is the incredible access. Spectators aren’t separated from the action by massive fences or grandstands. Instead, you can wander through the pits, admire everything from purpose-built drag cars to beautifully prepared street machines, and watch crews making final adjustments before each run.
Then comes the moment everyone waits for.
Engines roar to life. Burnouts fill the air with the unmistakable smell of race fuel and hot rubber. Lights flash green and within seconds the cars disappear down the quarter-mile at breathtaking speed. Many competitors exceed 200 km/h before crossing the finish line.
Even between runs there is plenty to see. The Pro Shop offers racing apparel, souvenirs and refreshments, while the Half Track Snack Shack serves classic concession favourites throughout the day.
Whether you’re an experienced motorsport fan or introducing children to racing for the first time, Mission Raceway offers an affordable and exciting day out just over an hour from Vancouver.
The combination of speed, accessibility and welcoming competitors makes this one of the Fraser Valley’s hidden gems.
