► A favourite stop for coffee, lunch and conversation and a café with a special place in our Fraser Valley travels.

Great coffee, delicious food, familiar faces and a special connection to the local community is why this little café has become one of our favourite stops in Hope.

Some Places Just Keep Drawing You Back

Whenever we visit Hope, British Columbia, there’s one place we almost always find ourselves returning to. The Blue Moose Coffee House.

Whether it’s a morning coffee, a cup of tea, a light lunch or simply somewhere to relax after exploring the surrounding mountains, this welcoming little café has become something of a tradition for us. Located at 322 Wallace Street, directly across from Hope Memorial Park, it’s one of the easiest places to find when visiting downtown Hope.

And judging by the number of locals and travellers who stop here, we’re certainly not alone in our appreciation of this popular café. We’ve travelled extensively and visited countless independent coffee shops around the world, but there are certain places that leave a lasting impression.

Sometimes it’s the coffee. Sometimes it’s the food. And sometimes it’s simply the way you’re treated from the moment you walk through the door. At the Blue Moose, it’s all three.

What we particularly enjoy is that this isn’t somewhere you feel rushed to finish your drink and move along. It’s the sort of place where you settle into a comfortable chair, look around at the artwork, enjoy your coffee and suddenly realize you’ve been there considerably longer than you intended.

And for us, there’s a rather special personal history attached to the café.

▶︎ Our Personal Connection to the Blue Moose and the Hope Standard

Long before the Blue Moose became one of our regular stops while travelling together, my husband already knew the café through his work in the newspaper industry. He worked closely with Pattie Desjardins, who is the General Manager of the Hope Standard newspaper.

Pattie was one of the hardest-working people in the industry, someone who understood the importance of local journalism, building relationships and supporting the community. She is a big part of Hope’s thriving event scene.

Community newspapers have traditionally done much more than simply report the news. They’ve helped organize events, promote local businesses, support fundraising activities and bring people together. The Hope Standard was no exception.

The newspaper would often partner with the Blue Moose Coffee House on community initiatives, reflecting the strong connections between local businesses and the people serving Hope.

Through those relationships, my husband also came to know the café’s original owner, Wes. So whenever he travelled to Hope for meetings, he would inevitably make a beeline for the Blue Moose. It became a familiar stop.

Sometimes it was for a quick coffee before an appointment. Other times it was somewhere to catch up with colleagues, discuss community projects or simply enjoy a little break. Over the years, those visits became part of the routine.

And when we began exploring Hope together more regularly, it was only natural that the Blue Moose would become one of our favourite stops as a couple.

It’s one of the reasons this particular café means more to us than simply somewhere to purchase a good cup of coffee. There are memories and friendships associated with it.

And those connections are often what make the difference between somewhere you visit once and somewhere you keep returning to for years.

▶︎ The History of the Blue Moose: A Hope Favourite Since 2000

The Blue Moose Coffee House first opened its doors in December 2000.

The café was created by Wes Bergmann, who wanted to establish a welcoming environment where people could gather, enjoy good coffee and food, and share conversation.

It was a simple concept, but one that has clearly stood the test of time. More than 25 years later, the Blue Moose remains one of Hope’s best-known independent cafés.

Its location has certainly helped. Hope sits at a major junction of British Columbia’s highway network, with travellers passing through on their way toward the Fraser Canyon, the Okanagan, the Coquihalla Highway and the Canadian Rockies.

For many people, Hope is the first significant stop after leaving the Lower Mainland. For others, it’s the place they stop before completing the final stretch of a long journey home.

And rather than settling for another hurried stop at a highway fast-food restaurant, many visitors head into downtown Hope to discover somewhere with a little more character. That’s where the Blue Moose fits in perfectly.

It’s become a familiar landmark for regular road-trippers, local residents and visitors exploring this beautiful mountain town. But despite its popularity with travellers, it still feels very much like a local café.

And we think that’s one of its greatest strengths.

✓ The Living Room of Hope: A Place to Relax and Stay Awhile

Walk inside the Blue Moose and you’ll quickly understand why people keep returning. The interior has a colourful, comfortable atmosphere, with couches, tables, local artwork and plenty of character.

There’s enough space to enjoy a conversation without feeling as though you’re sitting directly on top of the next table. We’ve always enjoyed the relaxed surroundings.

You might see local residents meeting friends over coffee, travellers checking their road-trip plans, someone enjoying lunch with a book or families taking a break from sightseeing. It’s a lovely mixture of people.

And there’s something particularly welcoming about that.

The Blue Moose has sometimes been described as the living room of Hope, and we think that’s a fitting description. It isn’t simply a café where drinks and meals are served. It’s a meeting place.

Somewhere conversations happen naturally, friendships are maintained and visitors become part of the everyday atmosphere of the town. When you spend as much time travelling as we do, you quickly learn to recognize places that have genuine character.

You can’t manufacture that feeling with expensive furniture or clever marketing. It comes from the people, the atmosphere and the way a business has become part of its community.

The Blue Moose has all of those qualities.

A cup of latte coffee topped with a beautifully crafted milk froth design resembling a leaf.
A tall sandwich made with multiple layers of whole grain bread, lettuce, turkey slices, red peppers, and other vegetables, held by a person in a kitchen setting.

✓ It’s the People Who Make the Blue Moose Special

The one thing we’ve learned is that genuine hospitality can make all the difference. Every time I’ve personally visited the Blue Moose Coffee House, I’ve been treated not simply as another customer, but as a welcome guest.

The warm smiles, friendly conversations and genuine kindness of the people working here have always made me feel at home. And there’s nothing forced or artificial about the welcome. It’s genuine and authentic.

That’s something we value enormously. Good service isn’t necessarily about someone constantly checking your table or asking whether everything is satisfactory. Sometimes it’s simply a friendly smile, a genuine conversation and the feeling that people are pleased you’ve chosen to visit.

That’s what we’ve consistently experienced at the Blue Moose. We’ve often said that good food and coffee might encourage you to visit a café for the first time, but it’s the people and the way they make you feel that bring you back.

That’s exactly why the Blue Moose will always be one of our favourite stops whenever we’re in Hope.

🍽️ What’s on the Menu at the Blue Moose?

We took another look at the café’s published menu, and there’s a genuinely interesting selection of food. The following examples give you an idea of what’s available, although menu items and availability can change.

Breakfast: A Great Way to Start the Day

If you’re arriving in Hope early, the Blue Moose offers several breakfast choices.

The Bacon & Ham Breakfast Wrap combines eggs, potato, smoked ham, cheddar cheese, peppers and onions, with salsa served on the side.

There’s also a Sausage, Hashbrown & Egg Burrito, filled with scrambled egg, sausage, hashbrown, salsa and cheddar cheese.

For something different, the Waffle Breakfast Bacon combines egg, bacon and cheddar cheese with a Belgian waffle and syrup.

A Bacon & Egg Breakfast Scone offers another convenient option, while a vegetarian breakfast burrito provides an alternative to the meat-based choices.

These are the kinds of meals that work particularly well before heading out for a hike or continuing a long road trip.

Lunch: Sandwiches, Wraps and Paninis

The lunch menu offers plenty of choices.

The Greek Chicken Wrap includes chicken, red onion, feta cheese, lettuce, tomato and tzatziki dressing.

For something meat-free, there’s a Falafel Vegetarian Wrap with red onion, lettuce, tomato and garlic aioli.

The Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap is another option, combining chicken, bacon, shredded cheese, tomato and ranch dressing.

If you prefer a toasted sandwich, the Chicken Pesto Panini combines chicken, bacon, feta, Parmesan, spinach and tomato on focaccia, with pesto mayonnaise. There’s also a Tomato Mozza Panini, featuring tomato, basil, mozzarella and a sun-dried tomato spread.

And for visitors looking for something a little more substantial, the menu includes options such as a Chicken Club Sub, Turkey Pesto Flatbread and chicken quesadilla.

Something a Little Different

A few menu items particularly caught our attention. The All Canadian Ciabatta brings together turkey, ham, corned beef, peppers, caramelized onions, cheese and sauces. The Moose Four Cheese is designed for cheese lovers, combining several varieties of cheese with sun-dried tomato pesto and Cajun seasoning.

☕️ Coffee, Tea and Something Sweet

Naturally, coffee remains one of the main reasons people visit the Blue Moose.

Whether you’re looking for a regular coffee, an espresso-based drink or a hot tea, it’s a lovely place to enjoy a break. Baked goods and sweet treats provide another reason to stop, especially if you’re not hungry enough for a full meal.

A Little Piece of Hope We Even Sent Back to England!

One of the more unusual things about our connection with the Blue Moose is that we’ve even sent some of its merchandise to our family in England.

And it was very well received! The Blue Moose name and logo work particularly well on items such as mugs and tuques. There’s something wonderfully Canadian about the branding.

It’s distinctive, friendly and a little quirky, which seems entirely appropriate for a café in a mountain town called Hope. For our family in England, it was a fun reminder of our travels and life in British Columbia.

Right Across From Hope Memorial Park

Another reason we enjoy visiting the Blue Moose is its location. Directly across Wallace Street is Hope Memorial Park, one of the town’s main public gathering spaces.

The Rambo Connection: Hollywood History Just Across the Street

Hope has another rather unusual claim to fame. In 1981, the town became one of the principal filming locations for First Blood, the movie starring Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo.

Released in 1982, the film transformed sections of downtown Hope into the fictional American town where Rambo finds himself pursued by the local sheriff.

Many of the scenes were filmed around Wallace Street, Third Avenue and the surrounding area. Today, visitors can follow a self-guided tour of filming locations throughout town.

One of the most recognizable local landmarks is the wooden Rambo sculpture near Memorial Park.

It’s become a popular photograph opportunity for fans of the film.

From the Blue Moose, you’re only moments away from several locations associated with the movie.

The contrast is rather amusing.

The Perfect Stop Before or After Exploring Hope

The Blue Moose is particularly convenient if you’re spending the day exploring the wider Hope area. We’ve enjoyed several attractions nearby, and it’s the kind of café that fits naturally into almost any local itinerary.

Othello Tunnels: HistoricRailway Engineering

Only a short drive from Hope, the Othello Tunnels are among the area’s most spectacular attractions. We’ve walked the historic railway tunnels several times, including during our summer travels.

Kawkawa Lake: A Beautiful Hidden Gem

Just a few minutes from downtown Hope, Kawkawa Lake is another destination we’ve enjoyed. The lake is surrounded by forested mountains and provides an attractive place for picnics, swimming and summer relaxation.

Compared with some of the larger, busier lakes in the Lower Mainland, it can feel wonderfully peaceful. A morning beside the lake followed by lunch at the Blue Moose makes a lovely combination.

Downtown Hope: History, Art and Mountain Views

You don’t even need to leave the town centre to enjoy yourself.

Walk around Memorial Park, explore the chainsaw carvings, visit the Hope Museum and discover the filming locations associated with First Blood.

The surrounding mountains provide a beautiful backdrop throughout the year.

And with the Blue Moose right in the middle of it all, you’ve always got somewhere welcoming to return to.

Our Verdict: Why We’ll Always Return to the Blue Moose

There are many places to stop for coffee when travelling through British Columbia. But some cafés offer something that goes well beyond what’s written on the menu. For us, the Blue Moose Coffee House is one of those places.

Our recommendation: If you’re visiting Hope, make time for the Blue Moose Coffee House. Enjoy a coffee or tea, order something delicious and give yourself enough time to appreciate the atmosphere.

And if you find yourself staying a little longer than planned, don’t be surprised.
