No Car Needed Algarve Travel Series

We set out to explore a quieter side of the Algarve and what we found were endless salt pans, flamingos in the wild!

This video is part of our “No Car Needed” Algarve travel series from Cabanas de Tavira, where we explore amazing day trips using only trains, ferries and local buses.

We arrived at the Salinas near Olhão just after sunrise, hoping to catch a glimpse of flamingos.

At first, all we could see were birds scattered across the salt pans; stilts, avocets, and egrets moving through the shallow water.
It felt like we were in the right place… just at the wrong moment.

And then we caught sight of them. A full group of flamingos gathered in one pan, before lifting off and gliding across to another. From where we stood, it felt like we had a bird’s-eye view.

These are Greater Flamingos, the only species you’ll typically see in Portugal.
They can grow up to 1.5 metres tall, with long, slender legs and a wingspan reaching nearly 1.7 metres.

Up close, their colour is incredible; soft pinks with flashes of bright coral and black underneath their wings when they take flight. That colour actually comes from their diet, which is rich in algae and tiny crustaceans.

They feed in a unique way too, heads upside down, filtering food through their specially adapted beaks. And while they may look delicate, they’re strong migratory birds, moving between southern Europe, North and West Africa, and even parts of the Middle East depending on the season.

The salt pans here create the perfect environment, shallow, warm, and full of nutrients, making it an ideal feeding ground. That’s why you’ll often see them moving together from one pan to another, always searching for the best conditions.

These Salinas are still active today, using a traditional process that’s been in place for centuries. Seawater is channelled through a series of shallow ponds, where it slowly evaporates under the sun, leaving behind natural sea salt that’s harvested by hand.

A quiet, simple landscape, but full of life. And easily one of the most surprising experiences we’ve had in the Algarve.

– The pink colour? It comes entirely from what they eat. No shrimp, no colour.
